Overload Course Option

Overload Course Policy

Students wishing to add more than the maximum number of classes for their program may do so during the Change of Registration Period (also known as The Add/Drop Period). Please follow the steps below for course overloads.

Graduate Students

Students in The Graduate School may attempt no more than 4.0 classes in a term.

Unit limits for programs outside The Graduate School vary.  Check with the program coordinator for more information.

Undergraduate Students

Note: Undergraduate students should review the Undergraduate Residence Requirement before registering for more than the maximum number of classes allowed per quarter.

Undergraduate students may register for up to 4.5 units of credit before the quarter begins.

Once the term begins, during the Change of Registration Period, the total number of units undergraduates may take is determined by the school or college as illustrated in the table below:

Students wishing to add more than the maximum number of units for their school or college should follow the steps below for course overloads.

Registration Steps for Course Overloads

  1. Obtain permission for a course overload from the appropriate person in the student services or dean's office of your school or college 
  2. Secure the signature of that person on a Registration Exception Form (available in the Office of the Registrar).
  3. Take the signed Registration Exception Form and any additional class permission numbers that are required to the Office of the Registrar during the first week of the quarter to be enrolled in the class.
