Cross-School Registrations - Chicago Campus

Students sometimes opt to attempt classes offered by another school of Northwestern University. This entails different processes based upon your home school and the school with which you intend to attend the class. Listed below are the basic steps involved in attempting a cross-school registration at Northwestern University.

HOW TO REGISTER FOR CLASSES OFFERED BY ANOTHER SCHOOL

Basic information to consider when attempting to register for a course offered by another school within Northwestern University (School specific information follows):

Consult the Registrar of your school to obtain information about:

  1. The possibility of taking the class.
  2. The possibility of applying the class toward your degree.
  3. The possible costs involved.
  4. The grading scheme of the visiting school and the ramifications/implications on your degree requirements.
  5. How the course will appear on your transcript.
  6. Whether or not you need to contact the visiting school.

KELLOGG- THE MANAGERS’ PROGRAM (TMP): CHICAGO CAMPUS SCHOOLS ONLY

Kellogg Student: TMP students should refer to the Kellogg student intranet for registration information.

Other students: Students enrolled in other Graduate programs within the University may take a maximum of 2 classes (6 semester hours) in Kellogg, if these classes are used toward their current degree. Otherwise, students are not allowed to register for Kellogg’s classes.

Students may register for section 70 level classes (Chicago courses) and are subject to the following restrictions:

  1. Spaces are available after Kellogg students have registered.
  2. Students must have written approval from the Dean (or designate) of their home school.
  3. Permission must be obtained from the Kellogg instructor of the class, who may require proof of knowledge of basic principles required to waive any prerequisites of the course.
  4. Students must submit their registration to their registrar.
  5. Enrollment must have the final approval from the TMP Registrar.

Please note that you will not be allowed to register in Kellogg if these conditions are not met.

SCHOOL OF CONTINUING STUDIES:

SCS Students: Degree-seeking SCS students may attempt courses offered by another school in the University if granted permission by the Student Affairs Committee.

Other Northwestern Students: Students in other schools at NU may attempt classes offered by SCS given the following conditions are met:

  1. Students may take one course per term from the SCS curriculum.
  2. Registrations are processed on the first day of classes; after SCS students have registered.
  3. Students attempting such registrations must obtain permission from their School’s Registrar/Dean
  4. Submit all relevant paperwork to the Registrar of their school.

MEDICAL SCHOOL:

Medical School students: Medical School students may register for courses in other schools within NU if the following procedure is followed:

  1. Contact the relevant school for course information.
  2. Spaces are only available after students in the school offering the course have completed their registrations.
  3. Medical Students are expected to complete all pre-requirements for course being requested.
  4. Contact the Registrar of the Medical School to complete the registration process.

Other Northwestern students: It is rare that students from other schools within the University would choose to attempt classes designated for Medical School students. However, if a student opts to do so, the request should be forwarded to the Registrar of the Medical School. The Registrar will consult with the Associate Dean for student programs and the course director. A determination will be made based upon:

  1. Reason for attempting the class.
  2. Completion of course prerequisites.
  3. Space availability.

PHYSICAL THERAPY:

Physical Therapy Students: Students in the Physical Therapy Department may not register for classes outside of their department.

Other Northwestern Students: Students who are not in the Physical Therapy Department are not permitted to register for classes offered by the Physical Therapy Department.

PROSTHETICS/ORTHOTICS:

Prosthetic/Orthodic Students: Students in the Prosthetic/Orthodic Department may not register for classes outside of their department.

Other Northwestern Students: Students who are not in the Prosthetic/Orthodic Department are not permitted to register for classes offered by the Prosthetic/Orthodic Department.

LAW SCHOOL:

Law School Students: Law students may enroll in non-law classes up to the equivalent of ten semester hours of credit given the following conditions are met:

  1. The course attempted is a graduate level course.
  2. The Dean of Students of the Law School grants permission to attempt class (most Kellogg classes may be attempted without such permission).
  3. No Language courses are allowed.

Other Students: Students enrolled in degree programs at the graduate level in other schools of the University may attempt classes offered by the Law School subject to the following restrictions:

  1. Spaces are available after Law students have been enrolled.
  2. Enrollment is approved by the Law School Registrar.
  3. Written approval of the dual enrollment is secured from the Dean (or designate) of the school of the student.
  4. Permission is obtained from the Law School Instructor of the class who may require proof of knowledge of basic law principles required to understand the content of the class.

JOINT PROGRAMS:

The above rules do not apply to joint program students. Please consult your Registrar(s) if you are in a Joint Program.

CO-LISTED CLASSES:

The above rules do not apply to co-listed classes. These classes are always the product of agreement between schools and are therefore considered to belong to the curriculum of both schools that have listed the classes.

CHARGES:

Charges are based upon the tuition policy in the school of the student.
The Registrar of the Student must inform the Office of Student Accounts of such registrations, so that the tuition to the visiting school will be nullified and the charges made to the school of the student.
