Directory Information Restriction
and the Blackboard-Based Course Management System

If you have filed a request indicating that you do not want information designated as “public information” under the University’s Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policy (see http://www.registrar.northwestern.edu/ferpa/) to be disclosed, you should be aware how this information may appear in Northwestern's Blackboard-based Course Management System (CMS) if you are enrolled or do enroll in a course that uses CMS. This information is being sent to all students with the restriction who are active in the student system, even if you are not currently enrolled at Northwestern or are not currently enrolled in any courses using CMS.

To enable the full class experience for all students enrolled in classes taught using CMS, certain “public information” is loaded into CMS. As a result, student’s names, official Northwestern e-mail addresses, and enrollment in the class are visible to other students who are enrolled in that class. To learn more about CMS, you can consult the CMS support website (see http://course-management.northwestern.edu ).

Please contact the Office of the Registrar with the subject: privacy if you object or have questions regarding release of the information listed above to other class members. Please use your Northwestern e-mail account if at all possible.
